Think Big Stud, situated on 100 acres of prime pastoral country in the picturesque Southern Highlands of New South Wales, is the realization of an ambition for well known racehorse owner Dato’ Tan Chin Nam.

Dato’ Tan Chin Nam first came to prominence in Australia as the owner of outstanding stayer Think Big, who won back-to back Melbourne Cups in 1974 and 1975 igniting a passion for Australian racing that remains to this day.

It is in his honour, that Think Big Stud has been named, the Bart Cummings trained dual Cup winner holding pride of place for Dato’ Tan Chin Nam in an honour roll that includes South Australian Derby winner Prince of All, Australian Horse of the Year Saintly and more recent stars such as Caulfield Guineas winners Wonderful World and God’s Own along with Danendri, Danarani, Prince Arthur, Ruz Lopez, Taikun, Accumulate, Frightening, Zingham, Zazabelle, Catalan Opening, now a much loved nanny on the farm and Pendragon, who completed his first season at stud at Think Big last spring.

Acquired by Dato’ Tan Chin Nam in February of 2007, Think Big Stud is being established as a boutique farm and has undergone extensive agricultural and capital upgrades, now boasting the facilities to stand the foundation sire Pendragon with the capacity for at least one other stallion in the future.

Located just 1hr 20 mins south of the Sydney CDB, Think Big features a temperate climate and ample rainfall that to a large extent mirrors the conditions found in the prime horse rearing country of New Zealand. It also offers easy access to the major stud farms of the Hunter Valley region and is currently home to a select band of broodmares.

Among the mares residing on Think Big at present are daughters of the Group One winning Danehill (USA) matrons Danendri and Danarani, Success Tale (dam of Caulfield Guineas winner and Cox Plate runner-up Wonderful World), Stars Above (dam of Doncaster Handicap winner Patezza), Melbourne Cup place-getter Zazabelle and superbly bred mare Leash, a half-sister to Group One Dubai Sheema Classic winner Sun Classique.

The breeding operation at Think Big is being run primarily as a commercial venture with a view to offering a significant number of yearlings at the major sales each year starting with the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale, which will feature three yearlings being sold for the first time under the banner of Think Big Stud.

An additional sideline for Think Big will be its use as a spelling facility for horses raced by Dato’ Tan Chin Nam and associates with immediate success for the first runners off the farm in 2008 including metropolitan winners Viewed, Lasker and Mi Casa as well as promising two year-olds Allez Wonder and Think Money.

In establishing Think Big Stud, Dato’ Tan Chin Nam has drawn together an outstanding team of staff and advisers with widespread collective experience gained from years of working in countries such as the UK, North America, Japan, New Zealand and other parts of Asia, as well as here in Australia.

Their combined knowledge of world’s best practices in farming, horse husbandry and thoroughbred management is what should give Think Big every opportunity to flourish.

Think Big Stud is a work in progress and a name destined to make an impact on Australian racing and commercial breeding in years to come.
